My Bicycle Fast
For the two weeks prior to OCF Claytons Leaders Retreat I was fasting from using my bicycle. From an 8 minute ride, it became a 15 minute stroll.. sometimes longer depending on how early I wake up in time to catch the bus. On the way back, the bike allows me to reach home in just 3 minutes (cause it's downhill) while the walk is same as before, 15 minutes. Since I was fasting, an act of sacrifice to God, not using the bike made me think of Him. Along the walk to uni, I'd often talk to Him.. sometimes praying.. sometimes singing praise. Lately, God has been responding to me more than I had before I got to Australia, so something happened out of this fast. Here's what I got from the 2 weeks of bikelessness.
The slow pace allowed me to spend more time with God. I say this now because with the bike I hardly have time to ponder upon anything happening around me cause the ride home is faster and task orientated. On the bike I'm so focused on getting home I forget about what is more important.
Sound's like life.
I think sometimes we focus on life so much that we forget about God. It'll be sad if there'll be a time in all of our lifes, namely the time between university and retirement when life will be fast paced - a time when we're quite vulnerable and could easily forget about God (i'm referring to job types matching our common degree titles).
So we wonder, what are we studying for? To get a degree to improve our chances out there in the working world? What happens when we do get to the working world? Will we be stuck to a hellish unending routine which basically takes us apart from God? How many people do you know in the corperate world which are able to maintain a Holy Spiritual walk like they did when were still undergrads? Why isn't there a CF in each organisation?
It's a sadder fact, knowing where we're going and accepting it as happen.. whether we realise it or not.
But boy, what a joy it was in those two weeks to be walking with God.. a nice slow.. stressless stroll hand in hand with Jesus. Something a fast life usually can't give..
I rather be a farmer.
